Not A Real Green Dress!

“I’ll buy you a dress, but not a real green dress that’s cruel…” I had this song in my head for all of last week, and here’s why! My Jenny Dress Pattern Review!

I LOVE green. Green is my color these days. The walls in my house are green. My peacoat is green, my windbreaker is green. I have a bunch of green shirts. Once, when I was organized, I had all my shirts lined up in color order. All the green all together, it was beautiful. But I did not have a green dress! Enter Jenny.

Here I am sitting awkwardly and trying not to think about the beeping self-timer. I need one of those pocket clicker thingys!

I met Jenny when she was first teased and tested in the fall. Here are some other Jenny dresses from the pattern’s debut. So cute. Just a perfect day dress, girly but not too revealing. And I know it will look just how I want, because it’s Scientific Seamstress. I planned this dress in November, I bought the fabric in December. It’s Sis Boom Anastasia in Grass, from the Girl’s World Vibe collection. I liked that it had an almost polka dot feel to the flower toss, in a sort of retro/modern way that is pretty much who I am. So I joined the Ready To Wear Fast in late December, vowing to not buy ANY clothes for myself, and I was totally going to make this first thing in the new year, then it was going to be for Pattern Revolution’s #selfcaresewing month in February. Then it was February 28th and I hadn’t made it yet to enter! So March 1st, I got to stitching. March is longer than February, so I hereby declare it Me Made March. Yep, that’s it.

These patterns are great, because Carla tells you just which pattern pieces you need and how to customize to get the right fit for your body. I remeasured myself and compared against the chart, and decided to make a small all the way through. My previous SS patterns were a small/medium mashup. I found out when I looked at the pattern that the middle band section actually had different cutting lines ON EACH SIZE to adjust further! I picked the 30″ width and the average length band. I’m 5’7″, and close to needing the tall sizes, but most of my height is in my legs. And then the bodice. Not only can I cut the size for my fit around my high bust, but I can pick my cup size according to an included chart and have it come out just right. And a regular or modest neckline. SO MANY OPTIONS!!

For this dress, I made a quick muslin to check the fit with the fabric I planned on for my lining. It felt pretty much perfect, except for some gapping at the middle back. I resolved to taper the sides of the back band piece down to a smaller width at the bottom, to account for where the piece hits my waist. This worked really well. The gathers at the back are soooo pretty. Here I am with my tree friend, staring off at the light from the sunset bouncing off the trees over there.

Other than the band trimming, I made only a couple other changes. I picked the cap sleeve, and chose to turn a narrow tiny hem rather than line it. Just personal preference, I wanted something less heavy but still a little shoulder coverage. I also understitched the lining to the seam allowance at the neckline to prevent it rolling to the outside. This is mostly because I don’t iron my day to day clothes. Just not gonna happen. Lastly, I used an invisible zipper. I love the zipper instructions in Carla’s patterns, but I wanted to elevate my look a little bit more and have my dress be just slightly more professional.

Here I am, sitting awkwardly and trying to pose for the self-timer. Man, I was totally going to put on my pretty shoes instead of the clunkers. Oh well. At least I have a fairly well placed invisible side zipper! There’s even one flower that somehow magically lined up across the zipper! Totally didn’t plan that.

I paired the dress with my ribknit Infinity Sweater from One Girl Circus when I went to pickup my son from school. This is my default “throw over anything and everything” wrap. This is what I wore when his cooler-than-me, 20-something student teacher complimented my dress. Yeah, that works for me. And here’s that kid of mine, since I can’t ever have a photoshoot without taking some pictures of the kids too. He’s going for this blond surfer look with his hair, which is fine by me because you’re only 6 once.

I would definitely make this dress again or recommend it to others. I think it would be great in a dressier fabric for all those cocktail parties I don’t attend, or more casual as a day to day around the town dress, because I think unfrumpification is an important trend. A sleeveless solid would be great. Well, at least I finally have my green dress.

And, about Me Made March? Well, let’s just say it deserves to happen. And mostly because March is longer than February. Who’s with me? #memademarch

Thanks! And of course you do. I have some brown also. It almost became the waistband, but I decided all one color was best.
